The New York Jets are reportedly contemplating a significant shift in their quarterback evaluation strategy ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft, with indications they may bypass Alabama standout Ty Simpson in favour of Penn State's Drew Allar.
Private Workouts Spark Quarterback Debate
The Jets conducted a private workout last month with Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, initially viewing him as a potential franchise cornerstone. However, recent developments suggest the organisation is exploring alternative options, having also arranged a private session with Penn State's Drew Allar at their facility.
Draft Positioning Creates Complex Decision
ESPN reports indicate the Jets might target Allar in the fourth round, a strategic move that contrasts sharply with Simpson's projected draft position. Simpson is widely anticipated to be selected much earlier, likely requiring the Jets to utilise either their No. 16 or No. 33 overall picks to secure him. This creates a substantial resource allocation dilemma for the franchise.
Simpson is generally regarded as the second-best quarterback prospect in this year's class, trailing only Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, who is almost certain to be chosen first overall by Tom Brady and the Las Vegas Raiders.
Allar's Challenging Collegiate Journey
The 6-foot-5, 228-pound Allar returned to Penn State for another season rather than declaring for the draft earlier, aiming to pursue a national championship. Unfortunately, the season deteriorated rapidly with the preseason top-ranked team struggling early, culminating in the midseason dismissal of coach James Franklin.
Allar's campaign was further hampered by a broken left ankle sustained in mid-October, necessitating season-ending surgery and complicating his draft evaluation.
Jets' Quarterback Quandary Intensifies
Head coach Aaron Glenn faces mounting pressure to identify a long-term quarterback solution following years of instability at the position. The Jets traded Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason, replacing him with veteran Geno Smith via a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders.
However, at 35 years old, Smith represents merely a short-term fix, leaving Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe as the only other quarterbacks on the depth chart. This glaring need makes the draft decision particularly critical for the franchise's future.
Potential First-Round Pivot Emerges
In another surprising development, the Jets are reportedly considering a major strategic shift with their No. 2 overall selection. While Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese has been widely assumed to be their target, NFL insiders Peter Schrager and Daniel Jeremiah now suggest Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey is under serious consideration.
The organisation reportedly views Bailey as more "pro-ready and polished," capable of making an immediate NFL impact—a priority following last season's disappointing 3-14 record under Glenn's leadership.
This potential double pivot at both quarterback and defensive positions underscores the Jets' urgent need to accelerate their rebuilding process through astute draft selections that can contribute immediately.
