Jeff Stelling Announces Extended Break from talkSPORT During Live Broadcast

Veteran sports broadcaster Jeff Stelling has confirmed he will be taking an extended absence from his presenting role on talkSPORT. The announcement came unexpectedly during a live broadcast on Tuesday morning, where Stelling was co-hosting with former Scotland striker Ally McCoist.

Surprise Announcement During Lighthearted Segment

The 70-year-old presenter made the revelation while discussing listener messages about first records and favourite pancake fillings. "Tell you what, we've had so many texts [on today's show] that I'm going to have to take a break, which is what I'm going to do for the next two or three weeks," Stelling told listeners. "I'm just going to chill out for a bit of rest and relaxation. I'll see you when I'm back."

McCoist responded supportively, stating: "Well earned mate, good for you." With Stelling temporarily stepping away, McCoist will be joined by fellow presenter Alan Brazil for Wednesday's breakfast show.

Stelling's Broadcasting Journey

Jeff Stelling joined talkSPORT in 2023 after departing Sky Sports, where he had become a household name during his 29-year tenure presenting Soccer Saturday. His move to the radio station marked a new chapter in his distinguished broadcasting career, where he has worked alongside notable figures including McCoist and Brazil.

Stelling's departure from Sky Sports came as part of the broadcaster's strategy to refresh its coverage, a decision that left the presenter somewhat critical. In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Stelling expressed his views on the industry's focus on younger audiences.

"There's a drive to get younger viewers, right throughout the media. I've never been convinced that was the right way to go," Stelling stated. "We all know that kids today don't watch as much TV as they used to. Young people will get their entertainment in different ways, so chasing them as an audience is misguided."

He continued: "What you risk is alienating the audience you've already got by changing to suit a younger audience that isn't [watching]. Stick with what you've got, stick with quality programming, quality presenters, quality pundits."

Recent Absences at talkSPORT

Stelling's break follows a recent absence by his colleague Alan Brazil, who was taken off air during the talkSPORT breakfast show on January 22 due to illness. Brazil required time off to recover from an ear infection, returning with characteristic humour.

"I'm still alive! I've never had so many texts and emails asking: 'Are you alright? Are you dead? Are you dying?' Give us a break! Honestly," Brazil joked upon his return. "I had a big infection in my right ear and my left ear was blocked...I was sat here thinking I was going to fall off my chair. That's the worst I've been, terrible."

Stelling's Perspective on Age in Broadcasting

The veteran presenter also addressed perceptions about age in the media industry during his Daily Mail interview. "People will tell me, 'you're an old fart, you're out of touch with modern views,' and sometimes they do now!" Stelling remarked. "Sometimes I get called a dinosaur – a pet hate, by the way. If anybody texts me, do not call me a dinosaur!"

He emphasized: "It doesn't matter if I'm 70 and you're 17. Our opinions have got equal merit."

Stelling's temporary departure from talkSPORT comes as he seeks well-deserved rest, with listeners anticipating his return to the airwaves in the coming weeks.
