Japan claimed their third Women’s Asian Cup title with a 1-0 victory over Australia in front of a record crowd of 74,397 at Stadium Australia in Sydney. The win was secured by a stunning first-half goal from winger Maika Hamano, who curled the ball into the far bottom corner in the 15th minute.
The Matildas dominated early possession and created several chances, with Caitlin Foord and Sam Kerr proving a constant threat. However, they were unable to convert, with Foord missing a golden opportunity in the 10th minute and again just after the half-hour mark. Australia continued to press in the second half but struggled to break down a resolute Japanese defence.
Despite late pressure and a flurry of substitutions, including the introduction of Hayley Raso and Emily van Egmond, the Matildas could not find an equaliser. Japan, favourites for the tournament, held firm to secure their first major trophy since 2018, while Australia suffered heartbreak in their fourth consecutive final defeat.
