Melbourne Cup Champion Jamie Melham to Lead Rest of World at Historic Shergar Cup

In a significant announcement for international horse racing, Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Jamie Melham has been selected as one of the team captains for this year's Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup at Ascot. The event, now in its landmark 25th edition, will take place on August 8 and marks a pivotal moment as it joins the World Pool programme for the first time.

Trailblazing Jockey Returns to Ascot

Jamie Melham, who made history in November last year by becoming only the second female jockey to win Australia's prestigious Melbourne Cup and the first to secure the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double aboard Half Yours, brings a wealth of experience to the role. The 30-year-old, previously known under her maiden name Kah when she competed at the Shergar Cup in 2019, has amassed an impressive career with 1,359 winners, including 19 at Group 1 level.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Melham stated: "I'm thrilled to be taking part in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup this year, it's such a unique raceday. It's an honour to have the chance to ride at Ascot again and I can't wait to captain the Rest of the World team. As a Global Event Ambassador, I'm excited to be able to work with Ascot and Dubai Duty Free to promote the event over the coming months."

New Hong Kong Team Debuts in World Pool Fixture

The 2026 Shergar Cup will see a notable evolution with the introduction of a dedicated Hong Kong Jockey Club team, replacing the previous Asia team. This all-Hong Kong squad will be captained by Vincent Ho, a world-class rider and product of the Hong Kong Jockey Club's renowned Apprentice Jockeys' School, known for his association with former champion Golden Sixty.

Andrew Harding, Executive Director of Racing at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, commented: "The Hong Kong Jockey Club is excited to be represented with our own team at the 25th running of the Shergar Cup at Ascot this year. The introduction of a Hong Kong-licensed jockeys' team reflects both the depth of star riders in our jurisdiction and the Club's continued commitment to contributing to the global development of premier racing events."

Celebrating a Quarter-Century of Racing Excellence

Nick Smith, Director of Racing at Ascot Racecourse, highlighted the significance of this year's event: "This will be the 25th running of the Shergar Cup at Ascot and it's exciting to see another evolution of the event, with World Pool and Hong Kong Jockey Club involvement for the first time. As ever we are hugely grateful to Dubai Duty Free for their support of this event, and of British and Irish racing as a whole."

Adding to the competitive spirit, Indian champion Suraj Narredu will return to the Shergar Cup after captaining the Asia team to victory in 2025 on his debut. His participation underscores the global appeal of this team-based racing spectacle, which continues to attract top talent from around the world.

The integration into the World Pool is expected to heighten interest from the Far East, providing enhanced betting opportunities and global coverage. This move aligns with the Hong Kong Jockey Club's strategic focus on expanding premier racing events internationally, further solidifying the Shergar Cup's status as a key fixture in the equestrian calendar.
