James Trafford has completed his return to Manchester City from Burnley in a £27m deal, signing a five-year contract with the option of a sixth. The 22-year-old goalkeeper will compete with Ederson and Stefan Ortega for the first-choice spot at the Etihad Stadium.
Newcastle United had been tracking Trafford over the past year, but City activated a matching rights clause inserted when the keeper left for Burnley in 2023. The fee is a club-record sale for Burnley.
“Rejoining City is such a special and proud moment both for me and my family,” Trafford said. “This is the place I call home. I am very excited and honoured to work under Pep Guardiola and with such a world-class group of players.”
Trafford joined City at age 12 from Carlisle United and spent eight years at the club before moving to Burnley for £14m in 2023. He never made a first-team appearance for City but impressed on loan at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers.
At Burnley, Trafford was first choice under Vincent Kompany but was dropped during a relegation season. He regained form last season, helping Burnley gain promotion with 29 clean sheets in 45 appearances.
Trafford was part of England’s Under-21 European Championship-winning squad in 2023 and has been named in senior squads but is yet to debut. Guardiola now has four senior goalkeepers, including summer signing Marcus Bettinelli.
