Jake Knapp Withdraws from PGA Championship; McIlroy to Play

Jake Knapp has withdrawn from the PGA Championship at Aronimink, the second major of the season, due to a thumb sprain. Tom Hoge will replace him in the field, competing alongside top players like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.

Knapp's Withdrawal and Hoge's Opportunity

Knapp, who has only one PGA Tour victory at the 2024 Mexico Open, also withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this season due to illness. He aims to return at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson after the PGA Championship. Hoge, with a single PGA Tour win, will seek his first major title as major championship golf returns to Philadelphia for the first time since 2013, and the PGA Championship returns to Aronimink since Gary Player's 1962 victory.

McIlroy's Injury Concerns

Rory McIlroy, a two-time PGA Championship winner, addressed concerns after being spotted limping at the Truist Championship. He revealed a blister on his right pinky toe but confirmed it won't affect his participation. "I've got a blister on my pinky toe on my right foot. But it's underneath my nail. So I can't really get to it or so it's a little sore, but I'll be all right," McIlroy said. He dismissed the blister as an excuse for his joint-19th finish at Truist, adding, "I wish that was an excuse, but absolutely not." McIlroy noted he identified some issues during practice and expects to be ready.

Spieth's Grand Slam Ambitions

Jordan Spieth, runner-up at the 2015 PGA Championship, aims to complete a career Grand Slam by winning this week. Only six players have achieved this feat. "It would be amazing, right, because it's just a very, very short list in history," Spieth said. He also highlighted his connection to the PGA of America through his long-time instructor. Phil Mickelson, a two-time winner, will miss the event.

The tournament features world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Masters champion Rory McIlroy, with Hoge joining them in the field.
