Jaire Alexander Opens Up on Mental Health Struggles and Retirement Hint
NFL star Jaire Alexander has candidly discussed the internal battles he has faced, five months after stepping away from professional football to prioritise his mental health. The 29-year-old former Pro Bowl cornerback, who was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in November, revealed the emotional turmoil that led to his decision to take time out from the sport.
A Tumultuous Journey Through Multiple Teams
Alexander's recent career has been marked by rapid transitions. After being released by the Green Bay Packers last summer, he briefly joined the Baltimore Ravens before being traded to the Eagles. However, just one week after arriving in Philadelphia, he announced he was taking a break from football to focus on his wellbeing. The Athletic reported at the time that retirement was a possibility he was considering, seven years after being selected 18th overall in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Struggles in Baltimore and Loss of Confidence
In an emotional Instagram post, Alexander reflected on his challenging stint with the Ravens, where he made only two appearances while grappling with mental health issues. As much as I loved Baltimore, I didn’t love the position I was in, he wrote. I had a bunch of internal battles with myself, I didn’t have that confidence in my abilities I once did. He emphasised that playing cornerback requires ultimate confidence, which he felt was slipping away.
This decline in confidence followed major knee surgery during his time with the Packers, which impacted his performance upon returning as a Raven. He was eventually traded at the deadline for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick. Alexander admitted contemplating whether staying in Baltimore was right for his career, crediting supportive teammates and visiting family members for helping him through this difficult period.
Strong Hint at Retirement from the NFL
Alexander strongly suggested he has chosen to retire from professional football. I never questioned God but why me, he continued in his post. All this while having a smile on my face. Football is a true gladiator sport, and once the confidence has gone it’s time to hang it up. He expressed gratitude to the Ravens organisation, known as Flock Nation, and general manager Eric DeCosta (EDC) for their belief in him, as well as for the therapy sessions that aided him during his time there.
Career Highlights and Abrupt End
Alexander spent the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, who released him in June last year. A former Louisville college star, he was a 2018 first-round pick and signed a lucrative four-year, $82 million contract extension in 2022. This deal rewarded his integral role in Green Bay's defense and Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2022.
After his release, he signed a one-year contract with the Ravens before being traded to the Eagles within five months. Now, it appears his NFL career may have come to an abrupt conclusion after 80 appearances, 292 tackles, and 12 interceptions across seven-and-a-half seasons. Alexander's openness about his mental health struggles highlights the pressures faced by professional athletes and the importance of wellbeing in high-stakes sports.
