Bournemouth, who have been impressive since Scott Parker's sacking, took the lead through Philip Billing midway through the second half. The Danish midfielder volleyed home after a flowing counter-attack initiated by Marcus Tavernier, leaving Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope with no chance.
Newcastle responded quickly, with Isak converting from the spot after a VAR review confirmed Jefferson Lerma had handled Kieran Trippier's cross. It was the Swedish striker's second goal since his £60m move from Real Sociedad.
Earlier, Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto produced a stunning double save to deny Joelinton and Ryan Fraser, while the visitors' defensive organisation frustrated Eddie Howe's side throughout. 'I'm disappointed,' said Howe. 'That was a performance below the levels we've set ourselves.'
O'Neil, however, praised his players' discipline. 'We defended really well and never really felt under threat,' he said. The draw leaves Newcastle with just one win in their opening five league matches, while Bournemouth continue to impress under interim management.
