Ireland Commits to Nations League Fixtures Against Israel Despite Prior Ban Demands
The Republic of Ireland have confirmed they will proceed with their Nations League matches against Israel, following a politically sensitive draw that pits the two nations against each other in Group B3. This development comes just months after Ireland spearheaded efforts to have Israel expelled from UEFA competitions due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Awkward Draw Follows Ireland's UEFA Motion
Thursday evening's Nations League draw in Brussels produced a contentious pairing, with Ireland and Israel set to face off in the league phase. Back in November 2025, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) had formally submitted a motion to UEFA, urging the immediate suspension of the Israel Football Association from all European competitions. This motion was approved by FAI members and forwarded to UEFA's Executive Committee, citing alleged breaches of UEFA statutes related to the Gaza war.
In an official statement released after the draw, the FAI clarified their position: "The Football Association of Ireland confirms that the Ireland Men's National Team will fulfil their 2026 UEFA Nations League fixtures against Israel after being drawn together in Group B3." The statement further acknowledged UEFA regulations that could lead to forfeiture and potential disqualification should Ireland refuse to play.
Manager's Controversial Comparison to Russia Ban
Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson had previously drawn parallels between the situations in Gaza and Ukraine, questioning why Israel hadn't faced similar sanctions to those imposed on Russia. "I don't see a difference between FIFA and UEFA banning Russia and not Israel," Hallgrimsson stated in October. "It is an absolute tragedy what is happening there. If FIFA and UEFA are banning one nation for the same thing, I don't see the difference."
Despite these strong views, Hallgrimsson confirmed his team would not boycott the matches. "Would I have struggled if they wanted Ireland to play Israel, if they were in our group? Of course we would play. I wouldn't have a problem with that," he added, distinguishing his personal opinions from the team's competitive obligations.
UEFA's Stance on Russia Contrasts with FIFA Position
The comparison to Russia's exclusion from UEFA competitions remains particularly relevant. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has maintained that Russia will not be readmitted to European football in the near future, following their expulsion in 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine. "UEFA's position is clear and has not changed," Ceferin stated during the UEFA Congress in Brussels.
This stance differs significantly from that of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who has suggested football should consider reintegrating Russian teams. The International Olympic Committee has also recommended that sports federations permit Russian participation at youth levels, creating a divergence in international sports governance approaches to geopolitical conflicts.
The Nations League draw has therefore created a complex scenario where Ireland must navigate their competitive responsibilities alongside their previously stated ethical positions. The fixtures will proceed as scheduled, despite the underlying political tensions that have characterized the relationship between the two football associations in recent months.
