The Premier League has confirmed that Michael Oliver will be the referee for Sunday's clash between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield. The appointment has sparked discontent among United supporters, who recall Oliver's controversial decisions in previous encounters.
Oliver has officiated Liverpool more than any other team in his career, taking charge of 66 matches involving the Reds. Liverpool have won 31, drawn 21, and lost 14 under his watch. In contrast, United have won 18, drawn 13, and lost 16 in the 47 games Oliver has refereed for them.
The 40-year-old has issued 105 yellow cards to Liverpool players, two resulting in reds, while United have received 98 yellows with five dismissals. Notably, Oliver has never produced a straight red card in matches featuring either club. He has awarded 18 penalties in Liverpool games and eight in United fixtures.
United fans voiced their displeasure on social media after the announcement. One supporter wrote: 'Michael Oliver being given the Liverpool-United game after the Dalot fiasco feels like a wind-up.' Another said: 'His performance in last season's fixture was shambolic. The time before that? Even worse.'
Oliver will be assisted by Stuart Burt and Tim Wood, with Craig Pawson as fourth official. Darren England and James Bell will handle VAR duties at Stockley Park.
