Kelechi Iheanacho scored a VAR-assisted penalty nine minutes into stoppage time to give Celtic a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory at Motherwell, keeping the William Hill Premiership title race alive. The Nigerian striker slotted home after former Hearts midfielder Sam Nicholson was penalised for handball, with referee John Beaton pointing to the spot following a review.
Celtic had looked set for defeat until former Hearts defender Liam Gordon equalised in the 85th minute. The visitors then snatched victory when Beaton was called to the monitor by video assistant Andrew Dallas as five minutes of added time were coming to a close. Iheanacho kept his cool to seal the win, sparking a pitch invasion from the travelling fans.
The result means Hearts remain top of the table by one point, having beaten Falkirk 3-0 earlier in the day. Frankie Kent and Cammy Devlin scored in the first half, with Blair Spittal adding a late third, as Hearts completed a full season unbeaten at home in the top flight for the first time since 1985-86.
Hearts now need to avoid defeat at Celtic Park on Saturday to win their first Scottish title since 1960. Motherwell, who had been on course for a European place, will need to avoid defeat at Hibernian to secure fourth spot after Hibs scored a late winner at Ibrox.
