Rochdale Icon Ian Henderson Endorses Third Promotion Spot for National League

Rochdale legend Ian Henderson has publicly supported the introduction of a third promotion spot from the National League to League Two, aligning with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and former Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling. Since 2003, only two teams have been promoted each season—the champions and the play-off winners—but a campaign dubbed '3UP' is pushing for change.

The '3UP' Campaign and High-Profile Backing

In February 2025, the National League and its North and South feeder divisions, comprising 72 teams, urged EFL clubs to vote on increasing promotions to three. This initiative has garnered support from Keir Starmer and 60 MPs, with Jeff Stelling joining as an ambassador. Despite efforts like staging matches with delayed kick-offs to highlight the cause, the EFL has yet to agree, maintaining the current two-up, two-down system.

Henderson, a 41-year-old forward for Rochdale, argues that adding a third promotion spot would make the league "more complete" and "competitive." He points to the intense title race this season, where Rochdale and York City are vying for the top spot, with one potentially missing out on promotion despite accumulating over 100 points.

Henderson's Perspective on League Dynamics

In an exclusive interview, Henderson stated, "I think as things stand at this moment in time, they're the rules and we must abide by them, but would I be open to three teams going up if I was in a position of power that would dictate that being an option? Potentially, yes." He highlighted examples like Wrexham, which spent over 15 years in the National League before promotion, emphasizing the league's relentless nature with frequent matches.

He added, "I think it may put together a more complete or competitive league if that were so," suggesting a model with two automatic promotions and one via play-offs. Over the past decade, most promoted clubs have remained in the EFL, with Wrexham now in the Championship and others like Lincoln City in League One, underscoring the quality at this level.

Rochdale's Stellar Season and Title Race

Rochdale has enjoyed a phenomenal campaign, winning 30 and drawing four of their 39 matches, amassing 94 points from a possible 117. They lead the National League but face fierce competition from York City, who trail by two points, though Rochdale has a game in hand. Henderson praised the team's management and strategy, saying, "It's given us a really good platform to go out and express ourselves with absolute clarity on what we need to do as a team to win games."

Reflecting on the pressure, he noted, "It is the business end of the season and it's just a case of accumulating as many points as possible. There's still a lot of swings to happen." Rochdale's next challenge is an away match against Scunthorpe United, a fellow promotion-chasing side, where a win would bring them closer to returning to League Two after a three-year absence.

Looking Ahead and Henderson's Legacy

Henderson, Rochdale's record goalscorer with 166 goals in 514 matches, is aiming for his third promotion, having previously succeeded with Norwich City in 2003/04 and Rochdale in 2013/14. He remains focused on the task ahead, emphasizing the need to stay calm and deliver in each game. As the '3UP' campaign continues to gain momentum, his endorsement adds significant weight to calls for reforming the promotion system in English football's lower tiers.
