Rasmus Hojlund's Permanent Napoli Move and £74m Release Clause

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund is poised to make his loan move to Napoli permanent this summer, with the Italian club reportedly planning to include a substantial £74.3 million release clause in his new contract. The 23-year-old Danish forward has enjoyed a transformative spell in Serie A, scoring 12 goals this campaign, which already surpasses his entire tally from last season.

Transfer Obligation and Financial Details

Built into Hojlund's current loan agreement is a £38 million obligation for Napoli to purchase the striker, which activates automatically if the club secures qualification for next season's Champions League. With Napoli currently sitting in third place in Serie A with 12 matches remaining, this condition appears increasingly likely to be met.

Even if Antonio Conte's side fails to secure Champions League football, reports indicate Napoli would still pursue Hojlund's permanent signing through an alternative option clause. The club's sporting director Giovanni Manna reportedly sees no obstacles to completing the transfer in the upcoming window, regarding the deal as essentially a formality.

Manchester United Departure and Clear Message

Before departing Old Trafford, Hojlund received a clear message from Manchester United that he was no longer part of their plans. The striker revealed to Sports Illustrated: "United made it quite clear for me that I wasn't part of the plans for this year coming into the season and with no European football and that sort of thing."

Hojlund explained his decision to move: "I'm young, I have to play football and for that reason, I think this was also a good opportunity for me. Napoli saw an opportunity to go and get me and as soon as I heard the interest from them, I made it quite obvious for my camp and for the people around that I only wanted to go there."

Background and Performance Comparison

Manchester United initially paid £72 million to sign Hojlund from Atalanta in 2023, following a 10-goal season in Italy. However, his time at Old Trafford proved disappointing, with just 14 Premier League goals across two seasons. His position became increasingly uncertain following Ruben Amorim's replacement of Erik ten Hag as manager and Benjamin Sesko's £73 million arrival last summer.

Hojlund's revival in Naples has been remarkable, with his 12-goal tally this season demonstrating his improved form and confidence. The striker also spoke positively about his relationship with Napoli manager Antonio Conte, describing their initial conversation as "quite short but very, very good."

Hojlund added: "I think we were both quite clear that it was a good step for me. I think we [are] suited, it was a good match. I think he's an incredible coach. I've only seen him do good things almost everywhere he's been so obviously that was a big part of it. When he calls you, you just have to say yes."

The permanent transfer appears inevitable, with Napoli having already drawn up contractual plans for Hojlund's expected long-term stay at the club. The inclusion of the £74.3 million release clause suggests Napoli value the striker highly and anticipate significant future interest in his services.
