Celtic striker Kasper Hogh has not scored in his last 15 appearances, and the £11m signing is facing growing frustration from supporters. But he is not the only expensive addition to the squad who must soon start delivering.
Performance anxiety can affect any player, regardless of reputation. Hogh is currently experiencing a difficult spell in front of goal, with his manager and team-mates offering reassurance that the goals will come. This weekend presents a chance to end the drought against a Kilmarnock side that has struggled defensively.
Striker's lack of service
Hogh drew criticism from fans after failing to score against Besiktas on Thursday night. However, by half-time he had around 18 touches of the ball, none of them inside the Besiktas box. The striker, known for his penalty-box instincts, is not receiving the service required to thrive.
The raw statistic of no goals in 15 games is difficult to justify for a player who cost £11m. But the lack of supply is a contributing factor, suggesting the problem is not solely his own.
Winger also under scrutiny
Haissem Hassan, another big-money signing, is also facing questions. The winger was on the bench against Besiktas while 35-year-old James Forrest started. Hassan cost north of £6m, with potential add-ons reaching nearly £9m.
Hassan is yet to score for Celtic and has managed just two assists. In terms of minutes on the pitch, he is setting up a goal every six hours or so. This output is considered insufficient, especially given Celtic's attacking plan relies on getting the ball wide to him and delivering crosses into the box.
Manager Martin O'Neill may be tempted to keep Camilo Duran up front for the upcoming match, but the game could provide an opportunity for both Hogh and Hassan to find form. If they cannot, questions will persist about their contributions.
