Keely Hodgkinson recorded a personal best of 51.14 seconds in her women's 400m Diamond League debut in Rome, finishing seventh. The Olympic gold medallist is targeting Jarmila Kratochvilova's longstanding 800m world record this summer and used the race to work on her speed.
The event was won by Norway's Henriette Jaeger, with Britain's Amber Anning fifth in 50.19 seconds. Hodgkinson's performance marks a step forward as she prepares for her primary goal over 800 metres.
In other British successes, Molly Caudery won the pole vault with a season's best of 4.80m, and Georgia Hunter Bell triumphed in the women's 1500m in 3:58.63. Olympic champion Julien Alfred took the women's 200m, while Amy Hunt finished fourth in 22.52 seconds, ahead of Dina Asher-Smith in fifth (22.76).
Noah Lyles won the men's 100m in 9.88 seconds, beating Emmanuel Eseme and Letsile Tebogo. Britain's Jeremiah Azu placed ninth. Lyles said: 'I am not showing anywhere to lose. I am here to win. 10 metres before the finish line I knew the race was over.'
