Hojlund Admits Falling Short After Ending 21-Game Goal Drought

Rasmus Hojlund has admitted he fell short of expectations at Manchester United after finally ending his 21-game goal drought. The 22-year-old Denmark striker scored the opener in United's 3-0 win at Leicester on Sunday, ending a barren run that had lasted 22 hours and 19 minutes.

Hojlund, a £72million signing from Atalanta in 2023, conceded he has been nowhere near the standard required of United's first-choice striker this season. Despite suffering from a lack of service, he acknowledged struggling to adapt to Ruben Amorim's system and produce his best form.

“I think it comes down to my performances as well,” said Hojlund. “I've not been on top of my game as I wanted to and we're still adapting to a new system. But I've been growing into it lately and starting to look a bit better. I'm just happy to get on the scoresheet and I'm sure they will come more now.”

Hojlund emphasised the growing connection with his teammates and his role in stretching the pitch. “He wants me to stretch the pitch and get into the channels, keep the centre-backs occupied. I think I've got a good amount of speed and that's what I'm here for,” he added.

On his partnership with Joshua Zirkzee, Hojlund said: “We didn't get to play too much together at the start, but now he's playing in a different role. Playing together with him is very nice. I think competition is a good thing, but we also support each other's qualities well.”
