Nicky Henderson Warns Constitution Hill's Publicity Could Be 'Undone in Ten Seconds'
Renowned trainer Nicky Henderson has issued a stark warning that all the positive publicity surrounding Constitution Hill could be "undone in ten seconds" if the horse were to fall again at Cheltenham. This caution comes as Henderson remains deeply uncertain about the future direction for the 2023 Champion Hurdle winner, weighing up a potential return to hurdles at Cheltenham or continuing on the Flat after a stunning debut.
Constitution Hill's Crossroads After Recent Falls
The nine-year-old star, once considered unbeatable, has faced significant challenges in his jumping career, taking three falls in his last four races over obstacles. This precarious situation led Henderson to explore new avenues, culminating in Constitution Hill's venture onto the Flat. The decision proved inspired as the horse made a spectacular debut in the £40,000 SBK Road To Cheltenham Novice Stakes on the all-weather track.
Before a packed Friday Night Live crowd at the Rolleston course, the 6-4 favourite, ridden by Oisín Murphy, hit the front over a furlong out and careered away to win by an impressive nine and a half lengths. The atmosphere at the Nottinghamshire venue was electric, with a capacity crowd of over 3,000 roaring every stride as Constitution Hill stormed home to victory.
Henderson Reflects on the 'Wacky Idea' and Racing's Responsibility
Reflecting on the race, Henderson described it as "the most amazing night" with a "crazy" atmosphere. He admitted to ITV Racing that it was a "wacky idea" that turned into something far more significant. "I hope and I'd like to think it did a lot of good for racing," Henderson stated, acknowledging the sport's current situation and the weight of responsibility in his decisions.
"Of course it does, we know the situation we're in and we're very lucky to have to make decisions like this," Henderson replied when questioned about the responsibility to the sport. He emphasized that the decision-making process has been lengthy and deliberate, with no rush to conclude immediately after the race.
The Delicate Balance of Publicity and Risk
Henderson highlighted the delicate balance between generating positive publicity and the risks involved. "Hopefully he's done a lot for the racing front page there, to give it that sort of publicity, but on the other hand I could undo that in 10 seconds if it all went pear-shaped and we are well aware of that," he explained. This awareness underscores the high stakes as Constitution Hill's team considers his next move.
The plan involves schooling the horse again this week with Yogi Breisner, a process that has been going "fantastically well" according to Henderson, with jockey Nico de Boinville "thrilled" with his progress. This keeps options open, but Henderson stressed that any decision must bear in mind the broader implications for the sport.
Looking Ahead: Flat Racing or a Cheltenham Return?
Henderson revealed that he had considered Flat racing for Constitution Hill a few years ago, but never expected the staggering performance witnessed at Southwell. "Let's just see, it's a big ask, but there we go," he added, indicating that the final choice remains up in the air. The team continues to deliberate between a return to hurdles at Cheltenham for the Champion Hurdle or staying on the Flat, with the shadow of past falls looming large over their considerations.
As the racing world watches closely, Henderson's warning serves as a poignant reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the sport, with a single misstep capable of erasing months of positive momentum and publicity.
