Hearts reclaimed their position at the summit of the Scottish Premiership but missed a golden opportunity to extend their lead after being held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by struggling Livingston. The result leaves the title chasers just one point clear with six games remaining, casting doubt on their championship ambitions.
A Costly Stalemate for the League Leaders
The Jambos had been temporarily displaced from top spot after Rangers' victory over Dundee United on Saturday pushed them ahead on goal difference. This match represented a chance for Hearts to restore a three-point cushion, but they faltered against the league's bottom side, extending their winless away run to four games.
Livingston's Early Surprise
Against all expectations, Livingston struck first after just five minutes. Babacar Fati's incisive run down the left flank set the move in motion, with his cross eventually falling to Stevie May. The forward displayed composure to slot a precise low shot past Alexander Schwolow from the edge of the box, giving the Lions a shock lead.
Hearts defender Craig Halkett was then forced into a crucial intervention to prevent Mo Sylla from doubling Livingston's advantage, as the home side threatened to run riot in the opening exchanges.
Hearts Fight Back
After weathering the early storm, Hearts gradually asserted their authority. Claudio Braga and Alexandros Kyziridis both went close before the equaliser arrived in the 24th minute. Marc Leonard delivered a superb cross from the right that Lawrence Shankland powered home with a commanding header from six yards out.
The visitors continued to press before halftime, with Shankland and Kyziridis both denied by resolute Livingston defending. Their persistence paid off early in the second half when Kyziridis' cross was headed back across goal by Shankland for Braga to nod in from close range, completing the turnaround.
Late Drama and Red Card
Just as Hearts appeared to be taking control, Livingston struck back against the run of play. Lewis Smith found space at the back post to force the ball home from a tight angle after Joel Nouble had helped on Cristian Montano's low cross, restoring parity at 2-2.
The visitors' frustration was compounded deep into stoppage time when Marc Leonard received his marching orders for denying Robbie Muirhead a clear goalscoring opportunity. The red card capped a disappointing afternoon for Hearts, who now face increased pressure in the title race.
With only six matches remaining in the season, this result could prove pivotal in determining where the Scottish Premiership trophy ends up. Hearts must regroup quickly if they are to maintain their slender advantage at the top of the table.
