Late Drama Sees Hearts Overcome Motherwell in Thrilling Encounter
Hearts maintained their position at the summit of the Scottish Premiership with a dramatic 3-1 victory over Motherwell, secured through two late goals at Tynecastle. The match appeared destined for a draw until a penalty decision in the 87th minute changed the course of the game.
Celtic Grind Out Narrow Win to Keep Pressure on Leaders
Meanwhile, Celtic leapfrogged Rangers to move into second place with a hard-fought 1-0 win against St Mirren at Celtic Park. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's first-half strike proved decisive, though manager Martin O'Neill acknowledged his team's performance was below par.
Hearts' remarkable comeback began after a goalless first half, when Emmanuel Longelo put Motherwell ahead. The home side equalised through Cláudio Braga's spectacular overhead kick, setting the stage for late drama. Stephen Welsh was adjudged to have fouled Landry Kaboré, allowing Lawrence Shankland to convert from the penalty spot and send the home fans into raptures.
Kaboré then added a third goal in added time to complete the turnaround. Hearts manager Derek McInnes praised his players for "dragging themselves off the canvas" with their late heroics, noting that despite being under pressure, he remained confident his team would find a way to score.
Oxlade-Chamberlain Strike Secures Celtic Victory
Celtic's match-winning goal arrived after 15 minutes when Benjamin Nygren found Callum McGregor, whose shot was blocked by Alex Gogic. Kieran Tierney picked out Oxlade-Chamberlain, who rifled the ball into the bottom right corner. The English midfielder had earlier seen a goal disallowed for offside.
St Mirren offered more threat in the second half without seriously testing the Celtic defence. O'Neill admitted his team's energy levels dropped unexpectedly early in the second half, but commended their resilience in grinding out the victory.
"We've stayed in the hunt and in fairness to the players they did dig it out in the end," O'Neill said. "St Mirren played very well, had control of good wee parts of the game, particularly in the second half, and we just couldn't get the elusive second goal."
