Tyrrell Hatton's 'Scary' Masters Confession After Sensational 66 at Augusta

Tyrrell Hatton produced a stunning six-under-par 66 at Augusta National on Friday, powering himself firmly into contention for the coveted Masters title. However, the LIV Golf star confessed to feeling 'scared' about the daunting challenge that awaits over the weekend.

A Remarkable Turnaround at Augusta

After a disappointing two-over-par opening round on Thursday, the High Wycombe native responded in spectacular fashion. Hatton's round of 66, which included seven birdies and just one bogey, was the best of the day and his personal finest at the iconic Georgia course.

'I think the greens are just going to get firmer and faster, which is quite a scary prospect,' Hatton admitted after his round. 'Because I feel like the 15th green can't really get much firmer than what it is.'

Masterful Performance Despite Late Stumble

Hatton's brilliant performance could have been even more impressive. He came agonisingly close to taking the outright lead with a birdie attempt on the 17th hole, only to three-putt for bogey on the final green. Nevertheless, his position heading into the weekend is formidable.

The 34-year-old quickly established momentum early in his round:

  • Birdies on the second and third holes
  • Further gains on the seventh, ninth, 12th, 15th, and 16th holes
  • Just one bogey on the 18th

Challenging Conditions Ahead

With dry conditions persisting throughout the week and temperatures expected to rise significantly, Augusta National is poised to present its most difficult test during the final two rounds. Hatton acknowledged the formidable challenge that lies ahead.

'It's going to be tough,' he stated. 'There's always going to be someone who deals with it very well, and they'll be putting on a Green Jacket on Sunday. Yeah, I'll just try and do the best I can and see if I get a bit of luck for a change.'

Other Notable Performances

Wyndham Clark, the 2023 US Open champion, also made significant progress up the leaderboard. Starting at even par, Clark reached three under before the turn and added another shot on the back nine to surge into the top ten.

Wolverhampton's Aaron Rai showed early promise with a birdie to reach two under, but ultimately finished at one over par after some costly mistakes around the turn. Despite this, he remains safely inside the cut line.

'I started off really nicely,' Rai reflected. 'Played a lot of nice golf on the front nine. Just a couple of mistakes, really, around the turn. Felt like I hit good shots. Just a little bit off in judgment of wind.'

Rai added: 'But very pleased with the consistency of play coming in after that. Hit a lot of good shots, and actually had some chances to be at least a couple of shots better. Overall, a little bit mixed. Played a lot better than the score, but yeah, still in a good place after two days.'

Positioned for Weekend Challenge

Hatton now finds himself within striking distance of first-round leaders Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns. His remarkable turnaround from Thursday's frustration to Friday's excellence has positioned him as a genuine contender for the Green Jacket.

As the course conditions become increasingly demanding, Hatton's combination of exceptional ball-striking and candid awareness of the challenges ahead makes him one of the most compelling stories heading into the weekend at the Masters.
