Harry Kane wins Ballon d'Or, fifth Englishman

Harry Kane won the Ballon d'Or on Monday night, becoming only the fifth Englishman to claim the award and reigniting the debate over whether he is England's greatest ever footballer.

A decorated career

The Bayern Munich striker continues to add to an already decorated CV, shattering records in Germany and helping the Bavarians maintain their domestic dominance. He is also likely to set an England goals record that could stand for decades, if not longer.

Kane as a player is hard to criticise, but those looking to pick holes in his career will point to the absence of a Champions League title and the lack of an international honour.

The greats and the critics

Sir Bobby Charlton, arguably Manchester United's greatest, could boast such achievements. Kevin Keegan claimed the European Cup and scooped the Ballon d'Or twice. And that is before considering the great England players who never landed a Ballon d'Or, such as Wayne Rooney, Bobby Moore or Jimmy Greaves.

In light of Kane's success, former Arsenal and Manchester City star Samir Nasri was scathing, saying: "OK, the statistics made the difference. He's a fantastic player with so many qualities. But he's never been the player who carried his team somewhere or made his team win in the very big matches. There's often a slight weakness."

Debate continues

Those who have played with Kane would likely push back on that assessment, but the question remains whether his latest exploit marks him out as this country's greatest ever player. The debate is set to continue as Kane's career progresses.
