Former Bayern Munich and Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has criticised the way Harry Kane is being used by head coach Vincent Kompany, describing the England captain's tendency to drop deep as 'not acceptable'. Kane, 32, has scored 31 goals in 27 games this season, with Bayern Munich unbeaten in the Bundesliga and on course to retain the title.
Writing in his column for Sky Germany, Hamann questioned whether Kompany is happy with Kane being deployed in deeper positions. 'It's commendable that Kane sacrifices himself for the team, but as a coach, I want my striker where he's effective and scores goals,' Hamann wrote. 'In the long run – even though he's currently doing very well in all areas – it's not acceptable to me that Kane is winning balls in his own penalty area, because that's not his job at all.'
Hamann also pointed out that Kane's goal-scoring output has declined in the second half of his two previous seasons in Germany, with only ten goals in 26 games after the midway point last term. He expressed concern that Bayern's Champions League hopes could suffer if Kane continues to drop deep, as the team may lack attacking power against stronger opponents.
The former Germany international added: 'He rarely gets into scoring positions at the moment. In the past two seasons, he has scored significantly fewer goals in the second half of the season. The question is whether Bayern can develop the necessary attacking power in the Champions League that they will need against better teams.'
