Shea Charles struck a late winner as Championship side Southampton stunned Premier League leaders Arsenal to reach the FA Cup semi-finals.
Ross Stewart had given Southampton the lead 11 minutes before half-time, capitalising on a loose backheel from Martin Ødegaard and a misjudged cross from Ben White to fire past Kepa Arrizabalaga. Viktor Gyökeres levelled for Arsenal with 84 minutes gone, burying a finish after Kai Havertz pulled the ball back from inside the six-yard box.
Just as Arsenal pushed for a winner, Charles – a second-half substitute – finished calmly with his right foot via the post after collecting Tom Fellows’ pass inside the box. The goal sparked jubilation among the home fans and secured Southampton’s place in the last four.
Arsenal, beaten in the Carabao Cup final a fortnight ago, have now lost consecutive matches for the first time this season. They face a trip to Sporting Lisbon for the Champions League quarter-final first leg before a crucial Premier League clash at Manchester City.
