Former Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has shown support for ex-teammate Anthony Gordon after the winger scored his first goal for Barcelona. Gordon netted in the 3-0 win over Getafe, ending his drought in front of goal for the La Liga champions.
Gordon's fast start at Barcelona
The England international joined Barcelona from Newcastle in the summer and has impressed early on. Before the international break, the 25-year-old recorded four assists in six games. He then carried that form into the England camp, scoring three goals and adding an assist as Thomas Tuchel's side won three of their four UEFA Nations League openers.
At club level, his first strike for Barcelona came quickly. It took him just two minutes to net his maiden goal for the Spanish giants.
Support from teammates and Bruno Guimaraes
After the match, Gordon took to Instagram to share his joy. He wrote: "I’m so happy my first goal came at Camp Nou and I got to share it will you all. Seguimos, Visca Barça!!"
Guimaraes was among those to like the post, while Barcelona commented "Proud." Jordan Henderson, Gavi, Tommy Doyle, Eric Garcia and Morgan Rogers also commented with positive emojis.
Gordon's goal and his gratitude to Newcastle
Gordon's goal came after he weaved through the Getafe defence, with a deflected effort wrong-footing David Soria. The Brazilian's departure from the North East was different to Gordon's, as Guimaraes left in a protracted move to Arsenal.
Following his move to Barcelona, Gordon praised Newcastle for helping him rediscover his love for football after a difficult period at Everton. He wrote: "I owe this club (Newcastle) a lot because, when I arrived, I was quite lost both in life and in football. The club has given me a sense of belonging and a sense of identity. It's allowed me to do what I always thought I could do."
He added: "It's put me on the biggest stage and allowed me to perform for the shirt. Since coming to the club, I feel I've improved a lot on the pitch, but this club has played a big part in the person I've become over the last three-and-a-half years. It was really important for me to leave this place in a good way because I've loved every single minute of being a part of Newcastle United. This is an incredible club and one that I'll never forget. I'll be a fan for the rest of my life."
