Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola engaged in a passionate and animated conversation with match-winner Rayan Cherki immediately following his side's 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.
The Post-Match Exchange
As celebrations commenced on the pitch at St James' Park, Guardiola was seen embracing the 22-year-old French forward, who was smiling before the manager's demeanour shifted. The Spanish coach, known for his intense post-match debriefs with players from both sides, appeared to be delivering pointed feedback to Cherki on the field.
The exchange lasted for approximately 20 seconds, with Guardiola gesturing to different areas of the pitch as if indicating a tactical error. Cherki was seen smiling while listening, but also attempting to defend his actions during the discussion.
Cherki's Decisive Contribution
Despite the post-match lecture, Cherki was the man who sealed the vital victory for the Premier League champions. Coming off the bench, he scored City's second goal in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time, cleverly finishing to double their aggregate lead.
The opening goal had been scored by Antoine Semenyo, who also had a controversial effort ruled out during the match. Cherki's late strike now gives City a significant two-goal advantage heading into next month's second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
A Maverick Talent
Cherki's performance and his unique style have drawn significant praise since his £34 million summer move from Lyon. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp hailed him as "the signing of the season" in his post-match analysis.
"For a long time it felt like players like this were disappearing from football. What we call 'mavericks', people who can produce those final moments," Redknapp stated. "I absolutely love watching him play. With his left, with his right, he is a wizard with the ball."
The forward has now racked up an impressive 15 goals in just 14 starts for City, quickly justifying what looks like a bargain transfer fee. However, Guardiola's post-match reaction highlights the manager's famously demanding standards, even in victory.
This is not the first time Guardiola has expressed mixed feelings about the French international. After City's 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest on Christmas Eve, where Cherki also scored the winner, Guardiola remarked: "There are moments when I shout at him and others when I want to kiss him, so I have an ambivalent feeling with him."
The manager has previously been critical of Cherki's defensive work rate, and the post-match conversation likely touched on moments where the forward chose to shoot late in the game instead of passing, despite ultimately scoring.
City will take their commanding lead into the return leg next month, with one foot firmly in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
