Guardiola Urges City Stars to Relax with Cocktails Amid Tense Title Race
Guardiola Tells City Players to Enjoy Life, Ignore Title Pressure

Guardiola's Unconventional Advice as City Close Gap on Arsenal

Pep Guardiola grabbed the headlines with his lighthearted approach to the Premier League title pressure, telling his Manchester City players to "take a lot of caipirinhas, daiquiris" and enjoy life during their three-day break. This came after City's crucial 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, which moved them to within two points of league leaders Arsenal.

O'Reilly Double Seals Vital Win

Nico O'Reilly was the hero for City, scoring twice in the first half on 14 and 27 minutes. His opener was set up by a cross from Erling Haaland, whom Guardiola later praised as "the man of the match" for his battling performance against Newcastle's Dan Burn. Newcastle's only reply came from Lewis Hall's strike, but it wasn't enough to prevent City from securing three vital points.

The win takes City to 56 points with a goal difference of 31, just one fewer than Arsenal. With Mikel Arteta's side facing Tottenham on Sunday, they could extend their lead to five points, but they would have played an extra game. The title race remains firmly in both teams' hands, especially with a pivotal clash between Arsenal and City scheduled for 18 April.

Guardiola's Relaxation Strategy

With a large portion of his squad inexperienced in winning the Premier League under his management, Guardiola was questioned about their mental resilience. His response was characteristically unconventional: "I say to the players: 'Guys what we have to do is take a lot of caipirinhas, daiquiris in these three days [off]! Enjoy life'. And after that, make a proper three training sessions, and go to Leeds."

He emphasized that 70% of the players have never been in such a high-stakes title situation, and he doesn't play himself, so they must embrace the pressure. Guardiola also hailed the Etihad crowd as "the best crowd of the year, it was unbelievable with our people," noting the importance of their remaining five home games.

When asked if he would watch Arsenal's upcoming match, the 55-year-old manager quipped, "I am on holiday so don't know."

Praise for O'Reilly and Milner

Guardiola was effusive in his praise for O'Reilly, who operated in attacking midfield. "He has also played full-back, holding midfielder when Rodri was not there. Now in his position today - what a player, he made an incredible step up," he said.

He also paid tribute to former City player James Milner, who broke Gareth Barry's record for the most Premier League appearances with his 654th game in Brighton's win over Brentford. "James Milner today made an incredible milestone to become the player with the most appearances," Guardiola remarked.

Newcastle's Perspective

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe reflected on the defeat, which followed a 3-1 loss to City in the Carabao Cup earlier in the month. He noted that this loss felt different, as the cup game was "almost dead at 3-0," whereas this match was more competitive. Howe also commented on a disallowed header from Dan Burn just before half-time, due to a push from Rúben Dias that put Burn offside, saying he only saw the offside and not the push.

Despite ending Newcastle's three-game winning streak, Howe remained optimistic: "The last three games have been a big upturn, in physicality and quality – I think we are heading in the right direction, so hopefully in the long term we are going to be fine."

Looking Ahead

City's next challenge is a trip to Leeds on Saturday, with training resuming on Wednesday. Guardiola joked about facing Newcastle again in three weeks for the FA Cup fifth-round, calling it "what a nightmare." As the title race heats up, his relaxed approach may prove key in keeping his squad focused and motivated.
