Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has delivered a significant injury update, confirming that key midfielder Rodri and defender Ruben Dias will be unavailable for Wednesday's Premier League fixture against Burnley. This news comes as City intensify their efforts to close the gap on league leaders Arsenal in a tense title race.
Double Injury Blow for City
Rodri, the 29-year-old Spanish international, sustained a groin-related issue during the closing stages of Manchester City's 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Guardiola indicated that the midfielder is unlikely to recover in time for the midweek match.
"I think for tomorrow Rodri will not be ready. We will see for the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton this weekend," Guardiola stated during a press conference on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Portugal international Ruben Dias remains sidelined, having not featured since last month's Champions League defeat to Real Madrid. Guardiola confirmed, "Dias is not ready yet," ruling him out of the Burnley encounter.
Title Race Implications
These injuries arrive at a critical juncture in the Premier League season. Arsenal currently lead the standings with 70 points from 33 matches, while Manchester City trail by three points on 67, but hold a game in hand. The Gunners are seeking their first league title since 2004, but have recently struggled, losing their last four domestic matches across all competitions.
In contrast, City have regained momentum following their Carabao Cup final victory over Arsenal last month. Guardiola acknowledged the demanding schedule, noting, "It's a demanding game we had on Sunday, both emotionally and physically. But at the same time, we have six games left. We know exactly what is going to happen."
Mental and Physical Challenges
Guardiola emphasised the high stakes for both teams in the title chase. "Both teams know they cannot lose or drop points. It will be difficult to recover, and our calendar is so demanding," he explained.
Reflecting on the psychological aspect of pursuing the leaders, Guardiola added, "For the team chasing, it is more difficult mentally and physically. After what happened against Arsenal, we have to go to Burnley and perform at the level we have to."
The absence of Rodri and Dias presents a substantial challenge for City as they aim to maintain pressure on Arsenal. With only a handful of matches remaining, every point is crucial in this tightly contested Premier League campaign.
