Pep Guardiola has outlined a potential exit plan from Manchester City, expressing a desire to move into international management when his contract expires next summer. The 53-year-old Catalan has dominated the Premier League since arriving at the Etihad in 2016, winning the title in six of the last seven seasons.
Guardiola’s current deal runs until 2025, and reports suggest he is expected to leave the club at that point. Speaking to ESPN Brasil in February, Guardiola stated his ambition to manage a national team at a major tournament, saying: “I would like to train a national team for a World Cup or a European Championship. I would like that.” He added that he wants the experience of being a manager at a World Cup, Euro or Copa America.
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss recently guided City to an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title, their sixth in seven years. In total, he has won 15 trophies during his eight-year tenure at the club. However, after securing the latest title, Guardiola hinted that the end of his remarkable reign is near, noting: “The reality is I am closer to leaving than staying.”
Despite the uncertainty, Guardiola has confirmed he will remain for next season, with further discussions scheduled during the campaign. He acknowledged the challenge of finding motivation after such sustained success, but expressed confidence that he and his players would continue to strive for excellence.
