Guardiola's Manchester City Vow: 'Never Give Up' in Title Chase with Arsenal
Guardiola: Man City 'Never Give Up' in Title Race

Guardiola Issues Title Race Warning to Arsenal After City's Gritty Victory

Pep Guardiola has fired a stark warning to Premier League leaders Arsenal, insisting his Manchester City side will never give up in the pulsating title chase. This defiant message followed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, a result that keeps the pressure firmly on the Gunners at the summit.

City Grind Out Crucial Win Amid Title Drama

The match showcased the relentless nature of the Premier League, with City securing three vital points thanks to a first-half brace from young midfielder Nico O'Reilly. The 20-year-old, who has excelled after transitioning from left-back, struck twice either side of a deflected equaliser from Newcastle's Lewis Hall. Despite a dominant start, City faced a stern test in the second half as Newcastle pushed aggressively for a leveller.

It required a spectacular stoppage-time save from goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to deny Harvey Barnes and preserve City's slender advantage. Guardiola acknowledged the challenge, stating, "Back again to Newcastle in three weeks, what a nightmare! They are an unbelievable team. We've learned that is the level of modern football. The rhythm they play at is massive, so we're really pleased for the victory."

Guardiola's Unwavering Mindset in the Face of Adversity

Reflecting on the title race, Guardiola emphasised his squad's resilience and long-term focus. He recalled past doubts, saying, "When I was at Spurs and we drew 2-2 someone said why don't we drop the Premier League and focus on the cups. I said, 'No, why? Let's go, let's try'." The City manager anticipates further twists, noting, "I don't know what will happen next but many things are going to happen. I don't know about Arsenal but I have the feeling we are not going to win all our games."

With a congested fixture list ahead—including the FA Cup, Champions League, Carabao Cup final, and an international break—Guardiola stressed the importance of composure. "Coming (ahead are) the FA Cup, Champions League, Carabao Cup final, international break, many games, injuries – so the best way is to relax now and focus on Leeds. Then we will see," he explained. His philosophy remains clear: "Win the next game, that is what we have to do, but if it doesn't go well, keep going. Never give up. Ten or 11 games is a lot of games in the Premier League."

Newcastle's Mixed Fortunes Despite Improved Performances

For Newcastle, the defeat marked their fourth loss in five Premier League games, leaving them in a mid-table position. However, manager Eddie Howe pointed to positive signs, highlighting recent victories over Tottenham, Aston Villa in the FA Cup, and Qarabag in the Champions League. "This season has been a challenge in so many ways. There are no excuses for that but the league table isn't what we wanted it to be," Howe admitted.

He added context to their struggles, saying, "But you always have to give context to every situation and our league position isn't based on this result. I thought this and the last three games have been a big upturn in terms of performance, physicality, identity, quality of play. I think we're heading in the right direction, hopefully, and I think that's the most important thing and then you know long-term we're going to be fine."

The two sides are set to meet again in the FA Cup fifth round next month, adding another chapter to their competitive rivalry after recent Carabao Cup semi-final clashes. As the title race intensifies, Guardiola's message resonates: Manchester City are prepared to battle until the very end, refusing to relinquish their pursuit of glory.
