Guardiola Defends Manchester City Display After Costly Nottingham Forest Draw

Pep Guardiola has defended Manchester City's performance following what could prove to be a hugely costly 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium. The result saw City slip seven points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, who have played one game more than Guardiola's side.

City Twice Surrender Lead Against Relegation Battlers

Manchester City twice blew the lead against relegation-battling Nottingham Forest in a frustrating evening for the home supporters. Antoine Semenyo and Rodri had put City ahead on separate occasions, but goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson ensured the visitors left with a valuable point.

The draw means City have now dropped 13 points from winning positions this season, a statistic Guardiola acknowledged but refused to dwell upon. "Maybe it's a lot," the City manager admitted. "But there are games where we don't deserve it. Today we played in general good for 90 minutes."

Guardiola's Analysis of the Performance

Guardiola was adamant that his team's overall performance deserved praise despite the disappointing result. "It's not about this action or that action," he explained. "In general when we analyse the game the game was well played. In the end we created a lot against a team that is really defensive, a really good time. We were dynamic."

The City manager did acknowledge one area for improvement, stating: "We missed maybe more contact with Erling (Haaland), his incredible movements, we have to look for him a bit more, but in general it was well played."

Late Drama and VAR Decisions

The match featured late drama with City believing they had strong claims for a penalty when Erling Haaland went down after knocking the ball past Forest goalkeeper Mats Sels. The incident was checked by VAR but no penalty was awarded.

City then thought they had snatched a winner deep into stoppage time, but substitute Savinho saw his strike cleared off the line by Forest defender Murillo in a dramatic goal-line clearance.

Title Race Implications

With Arsenal securing a 1-0 win at Brighton, the initiative in the Premier League title race has firmly shifted to Mikel Arteta's side. When asked about the championship battle, Guardiola remained pragmatic: "The feeling is we have to play one less. Now it is Newcastle, always the thought is about what's next."

Attention now turns to this weekend's FA Cup fixtures, with City needing to regroup quickly after dropping crucial points in their title defence.

Forest's Perspective and Pereira's Satisfaction

While City lost ground at the top of the table, the point proved valuable for Nottingham Forest, keeping them out of the relegation zone on a night when West Ham won at Fulham.

Forest manager Vitor Pereira was delighted with his team's performance, particularly given their demanding schedule. "It was a tough game, but with a lot of personality by my team with quality and organisation," he said. "With one day less to recover it's not easy, five games in 15 days and then the travel to play, it's not easy to perform at this level. I'm happy with my players."

Pereira remains without a win in 13 Premier League games this season across spells with Wolves and Forest, but this result was celebrated enthusiastically at the final whistle. "It's important to prove that we can (do it)," he added.

The Forest manager highlighted the improvement from their previous match, stating: "The game in Brighton (Sunday's 2-1 defeat) was for me and for the players, in the first half, disappointing because we never (applied) our pressure in a compact way, we never played as a block. Today we recovered again our positions, our organisation, and against a top team, waiting for the right moments to hurt them."
