Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has praised Brazilian legend Ronaldo, calling his stepover technique 'kind of crazy' in a rare interview while playing for Marseille in Ligue 1.
Speaking to Ligue 1 Plus before Friday's match against Nice, the 24-year-old was asked about his best move on the pitch. 'The stepover,' he replied. When the interviewer mentioned Ronaldo, Greenwood said: 'I watched a lot of him when I was younger, he used to do it on the goalkeepers a lot, which is kind of crazy.'
Greenwood scored twice in Marseille's 5-1 win over Nice, taking his season tally to 10 goals and moving him top of the Ligue 1 scoring charts, ahead of Strasbourg's Joaquin Panichelli. The victory lifted Marseille above Paris Saint-Germain to the summit of the table.
In the same interview, Greenwood revealed his pre-match ritual. 'The night before a game, I'm in bed and you're just visualising things in your head, moments on the pitch,' he said. 'When I go out to warm up, I like to visualise ... so when it comes to it it's second nature really, I can just do it straight away.'
He also discussed the advantage of being two-footed. 'When you've got both feet, the defender sometimes likes to show you one way on to your weaker side ... if he's showing me or wants to push me, I'll take the opportunity because I can shoot on the right side. Or if he wants to show me to the left, I can take the opportunity on the left.'
