Bayeux's decision to adopt an open approach backfired spectacularly, with ex-United player Angel Gomes opening the scoring after 13 minutes. Greenwood added his first goal in the 26th minute with a left-footed effort, and then doubled his tally shortly after the break to make it 5-0. He also set up goals for Amine Gouiri and CJ Egan-Riley before completing his hat-trick with the final kick of the game, taking his season's tally to 19 goals in all competitions.
French media were effusive in their praise for Greenwood. Ouest France described his display as 'dazzling', noting that he scored a hat-trick and provided two assists. La Provence awarded him a 7.5/10 rating, remarking that 'the Englishman strolled through the game' and was promoted to captain at halftime. Maxifoot named him man of the match with a 9.5/10 rating, while 90min France gave a perfect 10/10, highlighting his creativity and clinical finishing.
Greenwood left Manchester United in July 2024 and has become Marseille's most crucial attacking threat this campaign. The win booked Marseille's place in the round of 16, where they will face Stade Rennais.
