Grand National Shock as Defending Champion Nick Rockett Withdrawn

In a dramatic development just over 48 hours before the iconic Grand National, reigning champion Nick Rockett has been declared a non-runner and will not defend his title at Aintree this Saturday. The nine-year-old horse, owned by Bradford-based Stewart Andrews, delivered an emotional victory for the father-and-son training team of Willie and Patrick Mullins last year, narrowly beating stablemate I Am Maximus.

Last-Minute Changes and Sudden Withdrawal

Nick Rockett had raced only once since his 2025 triumph, competing at Down Royal last month. A late jockey change saw last year's winning rider switch to Grangeclare West, with Tom Bellamy unexpectedly called up to ride the champion. However, Bellamy's brief Grand National dream ended within 24 hours when Nick Rockett was ruled out after being reported to be coughing.

Consequently, Gordon Elliott's Pied Piper, the first reserve, will now enter the race in his place. The deadline for reserves to make the final field is 1pm on Friday if any further non-runners occur before Saturday's event.

Impact on the Race and Historical Context

Nick Rockett's absence could significantly improve I Am Maximus's chances as he bids to make history this weekend. The 2024 winner aims to emulate the legendary Red Rum by winning, losing, and then regaining the Grand National title. No horse since Ginger McCain's Aintree icon has achieved this feat in the world's most famous steeplechase.

Red Rum won in 1973 and 1974, placed second in 1975 and 1976, and secured a historic third victory in 1977. However, I Am Maximus is unlikely to have an easy path to victory.

Strong Competition from Irish Contenders

The Rebecca Curtis-trained Haiti Couleurs is also targeting a slice of history, as no horse has ever won the Welsh, Irish, and Grand Nationals. Additionally, Banbridge, Gerri Colombe, Firefox, Monty's Star, and Oscars Brother strengthen Ireland's traditionally powerful presence in the race.

Oscars Brother, trained by Connor King, will be ridden by his brother Daniel, adding a familial element to the competition. With Nick Rockett's withdrawal, the race dynamics have shifted unexpectedly, setting the stage for a thrilling and unpredictable Grand National at Aintree.
