Grand National 2026: Aintree Dates and Key Changes

The countdown has officially begun for one of the most anticipated events in the British sporting calendar. The 2026 Randox Grand National Festival is scheduled to take place at the iconic Aintree Racecourse from Thursday, 9 April, through to Saturday, 11 April.

A Decade of Randox Sponsorship

This edition marks a significant milestone as it celebrates the tenth anniversary of Randox's title sponsorship of the festival. To commemorate this occasion, a bespoke Anniversary Trophy has been commissioned in collaboration with the luxury house Boodles. This exclusive trophy will be presented to the winner of the Grand National race itself, which is set to start at 4.00pm on Saturday, 11 April.

Race Details and Format

The world-famous steeplechase will maintain its traditional format, with a field capped at 34 runners. These elite horses will navigate the course's 30 iconic fences over a demanding distance of four miles and two-and-a-half furlongs. The total prize fund for the race remains a substantial £1 million, ensuring fierce competition among the contenders.

Key Regulatory Changes for 2026

Organisers have introduced several important changes for the 2026 event. For the first time, final declarations for the 34 runners must be made 72 hours before the race. Additionally, the number of reserve horses has been increased to six. This adjustment is designed to guarantee a full field of competitors, enhancing the spectacle for viewers and punters alike.

The Three-Day Festival Schedule

The festival unfolds over three distinct days, each with its own character and highlights:

  • Opening Day (Thursday, 9 April): Sets the stage for the weekend's festivities.
  • Ladies Day (Friday, 10 April): A celebrated tradition known for fashion and high-quality racing.
  • Grand National Day (Saturday, 11 April): The climax of the festival, featuring the main event.

In the early betting markets, the horse Iroko has already emerged as a significant favourite, drawing considerable attention from bookmakers and racing enthusiasts. As the dates draw nearer, anticipation will only continue to build for this historic sporting occasion.
