Oliver Glasner has moved to clarify his position at Crystal Palace following a highly publicised emotional outburst, firmly stating his commitment to the club until the end of the current campaign. The Austrian manager's future has been the subject of intense speculation, with strong links to the soon-to-be-vacant managerial role at Manchester United.
Glasner Stands By Emotional Outburst
The Crystal Palace boss does not regret his passionate comments made after his side's recent defeat to Sunderland, a match which coincided with captain Marc Guehi's imminent departure to Manchester City. Glasner described feeling "abandoned" and lacking "support" during that period, comments which prompted chairman Steve Parish to reportedly consider the manager's position.
"No, I don't regret it," Glasner stated unequivocally. "Do I think it was the best way? No, I don't think so, but that's Oliver Glasner. I think it's also a part of what we achieved together, that I'm that emotional. I think it helps to create the spirit, that togetherness, that belief."
Clearing the Air with Parish
The 51-year-old manager revealed he has since held extensive talks with co-owner Steve Parish to resolve any tensions. The pair enjoyed a "very long dinner" together which Glasner described as a "very, very good talk for both of us."
Despite this reconciliation, Glasner confirmed that "nothing changed" regarding his previously announced decision to leave the club when his contract expires this summer. This departure timeline has naturally fuelled speculation about a potential move to Manchester United, who are seeking a long-term successor to Ruben Amorim.
The Guehi Departure Controversy
Central to Glasner's frustration was the timing of Marc Guehi's transfer to Manchester City, rather than the sale itself. The manager revealed he had agreed to the defender's sale a year earlier but took issue with how the situation was handled.
"I know that Crystal Palace will always sell players if they have big offers from other clubs," Glasner explained, "but it was just the situation, telling the team 28 hours before a Premier League game that the captain is leaving. This was my feeling at that moment."
Current Squad Situation
Looking ahead to the remainder of the season, Glasner addressed speculation surrounding striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, stating the situation is "very clear." The French international has not submitted a formal transfer request and no bids have been received, according to the manager.
Glasner also confirmed that goalkeeper Dean Henderson will captain the side for the rest of the campaign, beginning with Sunday's crucial Premier League encounter against Chelsea at Selhurst Park. The returns of Ismaila Sarr from Africa Cup of Nations duty and a fully fit Daniel Munoz provide additional boosts to the squad.
Looking Forward
Despite Palace's current ten-game winless run across all competitions, Glasner remains optimistic about finishing the season strongly. He likened recent events to a passing "thunderstorm" and predicted brighter days ahead for the south London club.
Both manager and chairman are "100 per cent committed" to achieving the best possible finish to what has been a challenging campaign for last season's FA Cup winners. As the summer approaches, all eyes will be on Glasner's next move, with Manchester United monitoring developments closely while Crystal Palace prepare for another period of transition.
