In a devastating incident that has shocked the football community, Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong has been shot and killed during a horrific armed robbery attack on his team's bus. The 20-year-old winger for Berekum Chelsea died as the team travelled back from a Ghana Premier League fixture on Sunday, with the country's football association confirming the tragic news.
Details of the Fatal Attack
The fatal armed robbery occurred on the Goaso–Bibiani road while Berekum Chelsea were returning from an away match against Samartex in Samreboi, located in the southern region of Ghana. According to a statement released by the club on Monday, the team bus was ambushed by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent passage.
"Masked men welding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse," the club detailed in their harrowing account. "The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover during the violent attack."
Football Association's Response
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed profound shock and deep sorrow at the loss of the promising young talent. In an official statement, the GFA said: "This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole. Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league."
The association emphasized that Frimpong's death represents a significant blow to Ghanaian football, highlighting his potential and commitment to the sport at just 20 years of age.
Security Concerns and Historical Context
In response to this tragedy, the GFA has announced plans to strengthen security arrangements for clubs travelling for domestic competitions. This incident unfortunately echoes a similar attack in 2023, when Legon Cities' team bus was targeted after a game at Samartex, though no injuries were reported on that previous occasion.
The recurrence of such violent incidents raises serious concerns about the safety of football teams travelling within Ghana, particularly on remote roads between match venues. The football community is now calling for immediate and comprehensive security measures to protect players, staff, and officials during travel.
Dominic Frimpong's untimely death has left Berekum Chelsea and the wider Ghanaian football family in mourning, with tributes pouring in for the young athlete whose career was tragically cut short by this senseless violence.
