Newsboy's Nap: Gethin to Win Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown

Newsboy's horseracing tips for Thursday's five meetings include a strong fancy for Gethin in the Group 3 Star Sports Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown Park. The Owen Burrows-trained four-year-old is expected to floor hot favourite Ombudsman in the 7.12 race, which is the highlight of a seven-race Flat meeting.

Gethin's Chance at Sandown

Ombudsman, the market leader, was beaten under a 3lb penalty in this race 12 months ago. Since then, he has won three Group 1 races, but his burden has now increased to 7lb. This opens the door for Gethin, a one-time Derby hope who made an impressive return to action in the Listed Magnolia Stakes at Kempton Park at the beginning of last month.

Sent off as the 7-4 market leader in a field of seven, Gethin stormed clear inside the final furlong to beat Devil's Advocate by three and a quarter lengths. That was just the fifth outing of his career, and it will rank as a major surprise if he cannot make his presence felt at Group level. There is no time like the present.

Herakles at Ripon

At Ripon, Herakles is expected to secure a second course-and-distance victory by beating seven opponents in the concluding Download The Raceday Ready App Handicap at 5.20. Paul Midgley's speedster made the perfect return on turf with a length-and-three-quarter beating of Westgate Warrior at Nottingham 19 days ago. A 6lb higher mark should not prevent another good account.
