Darts star Gerwyn Price has defended his dramatic weight loss after former Dutch rival Vincent van der Voort claimed he had gone too far. The 40-year-old, known as 'The Iceman', has shed three stone over the past six months, dropping from an XL shirt size to a medium.
Price said the transformation has boosted his mental and physical health ahead of his bid for a second World Darts Championship. 'I’ve been playing right through losing weight. It’s gradually happened over the last six months or so,' he explained. 'Just mentally, I feel a lot better in myself. When I’m putting on a medium shirt instead of an XL, it feels a little bit better.'
However, Van der Voort criticised the weight loss on a podcast, saying Price had lost too much muscle and looked 'like a kid'. The Dutchman joked that Price could end up 'getting beaten up' by younger players like Bradley Brooks, and advised him to eat more, noting that Price owns a fish and chip shop.
Price responded on Instagram by posting images of his new physique with the caption: 'Concerned about my weight loss? Well, don’t be, I feel and look better than ever.' The Welshman, currently ranked world number 13, is aiming to win his second world title at Alexandra Palace later this year.
