Gerrard Urges Slot to Drop 'Low Block' Talk After Liverpool's Marseille Victory
Gerrard Tells Slot to Stop Mentioning Low Blocks After Win

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has issued a pointed message to current Reds boss Arne Slot, urging him to cease referencing 'low blocks' as an explanation for inconsistent performances. This comes in the wake of Liverpool's commanding 3-0 victory over Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Slot's Post-Match Analysis Sparks Reaction

Following the impressive away win at the Stade Velodrome, manager Arne Slot was questioned about the key to achieving greater consistency from his team. The 47-year-old Dutchman pointed directly to the tactical challenge posed by opponents who employ a deep defensive block.

"I know why we're not consistent and that is mainly to do when a game is open, it is completely different than playing against a low block," Slot explained. "You cannot compare that with the game tonight when both teams want to press and play out from the back. If we're inconsistent, it's because we struggle with low blocks."

Gerrard's Firm Advice to the Current Boss

While offering significant praise for the performance and Slot's tactics on the night, Steven Gerrard used his platform as a pundit to deliver clear advice. The former England midfielder, who made over 700 appearances for Liverpool, believes the manager should shift focus from the problem to the solution.

"I'm really pleased for him because it can't be easy when you're under that pressure, when results are not consistent. But his tactics were spot on tonight and I think he deserves a lot of praise and credit," Gerrard stated. "But he needs to stop mentioning low blocks. Low blocks have been happening to Liverpool ever since I played and many, many years before me, that's just the way it is."

Gerrard emphasised that facing defensive teams is a perennial reality for a club of Liverpool's stature, and the onus is on the coaching staff to devise effective counter-strategies.

"Teams are going to do that, they're going to try and do everything they can to stop Liverpool. The key is, you've got to find the solutions. You've got the players to do it, you've got to find the solutions and then you will turn those low block games into wins, rather than draws."

Context of Liverpool's Inconsistent Form

The discussion around low blocks is particularly pertinent given Liverpool's recent Premier League struggles. Their title defence has faltered this season, with a recent draw against Burnley marking their fourth stalemate in five matches at that point. These dropped points have often come against teams content to sit deep and absorb pressure.

Gerrard highlighted that this tactical challenge is not going away, especially as Liverpool, currently fourth in the table and just one point ahead of Manchester United, battle for Champions League qualification.

"It's not going to change, it's what this team are going to face," Gerrard explained. "They're going to probably face a low block at times against Bournemouth at the weekend but they've got to be ruthless, they've got to show their talent, the big players have got to step forward and score the goals that are needed to win them games because they are difficult to win."

Looking Ahead to Crucial Fixtures

The immediate focus for Slot and his squad now turns to domestic action. Liverpool's next Premier League assignment is a trip to face Bournemouth on Saturday, 24th January, with kick-off scheduled for 5.30pm. This will be followed by their final Champions League group stage fixture against Qarabag at Anfield on Wednesday, 28th January.

The coming days present an immediate opportunity for Liverpool to demonstrate they can overcome the very tactical setups Slot identified as problematic. The advice from a club legend is clear: stop talking about the challenge and start delivering the results against it.
