Liverpool Icons Unite in Demand for Lineup Change
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has become the second club legend to publicly urge manager Arne Slot to make a significant change to his starting lineup. Gerrard has called for Cody Gakpo to be dropped in favour of teenage winger Rio Ngumoha following Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Tuesday night.
Disappointing Defeat Sparks Criticism
The Premier League clash saw Wolves take an early lead through Rodrigo Gomes before Mohamed Salah appeared to have salvaged a draw for the visitors. However, Andre's late strike secured an unexpected victory for the hosts, dealing a significant blow to Liverpool's Champions League qualification hopes. Gerrard, analysing the match for TNT Sports, echoed captain Virgil van Dijk's post-match criticism of the team's performance.
"He's right because for 65 minutes, Liverpool were desperate tonight, really poor," Gerrard stated. "[They] didn't create enough, didn't play at the right speed or the right tempo, they didn't have the right quality."
Ngumoha's Impact Off the Bench
The 19-year-old Ngumoha replaced Gakpo in the 65th minute and immediately provided greater attacking threat down the wing, despite Liverpool ultimately losing the match. This performance followed his historic achievement earlier in the campaign, when he became Liverpool's youngest-ever goalscorer with a late winner against Newcastle United in August.
Gerrard was emphatic in his assessment: "[Slot] has to start Ngumoha now, he has to start him because he's coming on and doing more in a short cameo and in a short space of time than Gakpo is doing in 65/70 minutes. He deserves a start now. He's got to start the kid on Friday night."
Carragher's Earlier Endorsement
Gerrard's comments mirror those made previously by fellow Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. After Liverpool's victory over Nottingham Forest earlier this season, Carragher told Sky Sports that Ngumoha had transformed the game after coming off the bench.
"Ngumoha did more in 15 minutes than Salah and Gakpo did before that," Carragher observed. "He changed the game and needs to be starting games."
Slot's Delicate Balancing Act
Liverpool manager Arne Slot faces a difficult decision ahead of Friday's FA Cup fifth-round rematch against Wolves at Molineux. The Dutch manager has previously acknowledged Ngumoha's special talent while expressing caution about managing the teenager's development.
"Let's be clear, he is a special player that will have more playing time and already has more playing time recently," Slot said last month. "If everyone thinks he is so good, then he should be in something to talk about again."
Slot highlighted the challenges of balancing first-team demands with youth development: "(I'm mindful over lack of under-21s football) 100 per cent - that is what makes it so difficult at the age of these two players (Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni) and where they are at in their development."
Immediate Chance for Redemption
Liverpool have an immediate opportunity to avenge their Premier League defeat when they return to Molineux for Friday's FA Cup clash. Ngumoha has started just three of his 17 first-team appearances this season, with one of those starts coming in the FA Cup third round against Barnsley.
Whether Slot heeds the advice of two Liverpool legends remains to be seen, but the pressure is mounting for the young winger to be given his chance from the start following another impactful substitute appearance.
