George Liddard, the British and Commonwealth middleweight champion, completed a half marathon just hours after defending his titles in a gruelling 12-round fight against Tyler Denny. The 23-year-old, who extended his unbeaten record to 14 fights, joined thousands of runners at the Brentwood Half Marathon on Sunday morning with only a few hours of sleep.
Liddard was joined by fellow boxers Craig Richards and Johnny Fisher, while promoter Barry Hearn started the race. The fighter was raising money for three-year-old Mario, who suffered a fractured skull and brain bleed while on holiday in Austria. Liddard said: 'I'm a little bit sore and I didn't get too much sleep, but I had to be here to do my bit for that family today. I'm a man of my word.'
Reflecting on his victory over Denny, Liddard admitted the former European champion pushed him harder than expected. 'He brought more than I expected, but I'm grateful for that. He took me 12 rounds – I've never been 12 rounds before. There was a lot to learn,' Liddard said. 'It's back to the drawing board, but I'm testing myself on the world stage.'
Despite the physical toll, Liddard was pleased to support the cause and join other fundraisers. 'I may have a few extra marks on me today. I promise I don't usually look like this though! I've earned myself a little break now and I don't think I'll be running for at least another week,' he joked.
