Gateshead on brink as Flacks Group takeover stalls

Gateshead FC are facing another crisis after the proposed takeover by the US-based Flacks Group stalled, leaving the club's future uncertain amid a dispute with Nigerian-based Shoreline Sports Limited.

On-field struggles and off-field turmoil

The season has been disastrous on the pitch, with just one win in 15 National League games leaving Gateshead bottom of the table and 13 points from safety after Saturday's defeat at Aldershot Town.

Off the pitch, the surprise agreement to sell the club to the Flacks Group, who boast assets worth over $7 billion, was a welcome piece of good news in a season littered with negatives. Chronicle Live understands the group have major ambitions on and off the pitch for the Heed and are keen to help the club realise their potential.

Takeover blocked by Shoreline dispute

However, as it stands, the Flacks Group will not get 'the keys' to the club due to a dispute involving Shoreline Sports Limited, a group fronted by former Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe, who tried to complete a takeover at Gateshead during the early months of 2025.

Shoreline is seeking an order from shareholders that would see 'certain financial sums' returned to the company, and legal proceedings against those individuals, rather than the club, are ongoing. In a statement released this week, Flacks Group revealed they have requested written confirmation that Shoreline have terminated their agreement to buy the club and confirm their deal is now null and void.

Talks continue but resolution needed

Talks between all parties and the Independent Football Regulator are ongoing, but a resolution must be found soon to enable Flacks Group to 'get the keys' and kickstart their attempts to bring about a revival. They already have the backing of the Heed players and staff and the Gateshead Supporters Society, both of whom released statements on Friday praising the group for their plans for the club moving forwards.

For the fans, who rack up the pounds, pennies, hours and miles following their beloved club around the country, there is a need for clarity and a reason to be positive. The football club should be at the heart of every single decision taken over the coming days and weeks, and ensuring Gateshead has a progressive and ambitious club to get behind must be the outcome when the dust finally settles.
