Arne Slot has come under heavy criticism after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, with a chorus of boos greeting the Dutchman at full-time. The reigning Premier League champions have stuttered to a top-five finish this season, suffering 11 league defeats and exiting all cup competitions without silverware.
Meanwhile, news that Xabi Alonso is a leading candidate for the Chelsea job has irked sections of Liverpool’s support. The former Liverpool midfielder left Real Madrid earlier this year and is reportedly being considered by Chelsea alongside Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva.
Jamie Carragher has warned that Liverpool may rue missing out on Alonso. “I always felt Xabi would manage Liverpool at some stage,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “Now, I think once you manage one of Liverpool’s rivals, as Chelsea are, I think it makes it a little bit more difficult. I don’t see how you go from Chelsea to Liverpool.”
On Mohamed Salah, Joe Cole defended the winger’s recent comments about standards at Anfield. “Salah is well within his rights to have an opinion on the team,” Cole told Paddy Power. “He’s been there for so long. I think he’s correct. It looks like there aren’t the same personalities in the team as they once had and that needs to be addressed in the summer.”
Slot pushed back on Salah’s remarks before the Chelsea match, but Cole suggested the comments may stem from frustration with the manager. The summer window is expected to bring significant changes at Anfield.
