Gabriel Jesus Casts Doubt on Arsenal Future as He Reveals Dream Transfer
Gabriel Jesus has openly discussed a potential fairytale return to Palmeiras, the Brazilian club where he began his career, as his Arsenal contract approaches its final year and his playing minutes remain restricted. The 29-year-old striker's comments have sparked speculation about his long-term plans in north London.
Contract Situation and Limited Opportunities at Arsenal
Jesus's contract with Arsenal is set to enter its last 12 months soon, adding urgency to decisions about his future. Since joining from Manchester City four years ago, he has faced challenges, including a serious injury that sidelined him for almost a year, only returning earlier this season. His role has diminished further with the arrival of Viktor Gyokeres, leading to increased competition for starting spots.
This season, Jesus has started just two Premier League matches, making an additional 10 appearances off the bench. His struggle to re-establish himself as a regular starter comes amid Arsenal's search for a more prolific centre-forward, with concerns over his goal-scoring consistency. In nearly four years at the club, he has scored 31 goals, with his debut season yielding 11 but failing to surpass that figure since; in the last two Premier League campaigns, he has managed only seven goals.
Strong Desire for Palmeiras Return
In an interview with Globo Esporte, Jesus expressed a heartfelt longing to rejoin Palmeiras, where he helped win the Brazilian top-flight title a decade ago. "My relationship with Palmeiras has always been very good and always will be – I have immense gratitude," he said. "My desire is to one day return to Palmeiras and win even more titles, because I've already experienced the taste of winning titles at Palmeiras. And it's something that's still within me, it's a very strong desire."
Palmeiras has shown interest in bringing him back for a second spell, fueling rumors of a potential move. However, Jesus emphasized that his current focus remains on Arsenal: "I have a contract with Arsenal. Obviously, my situation at Arsenal has changed from what it was before. But my main focus today remains Arsenal, making things happen here, helping in whatever way the manager needs, and then, obviously, when the season is over, we'll start thinking about it."
Potential European Alternatives and Agent Change
Beyond a return to Brazil, Jesus could explore other options in Europe. He switched agents during the January transfer window, now represented by Italian Giovanni Branchini, and has been linked with Serie A clubs such as AC Milan and Juventus. This suggests he might consider prolonging his career on the continent if a move away from Arsenal materializes.
The uncertainty surrounding his future highlights the broader challenges faced by players in competitive squads, where injuries and new signings can quickly alter career trajectories. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on whether Jesus secures more playing time or prepares for a departure, with Palmeiras looming as a sentimental favorite.
