Friend Shares Insight Into Dianna Russini's Emotional State After Resignation

A close friend of Dianna Russini has provided a glimpse into how the NFL insider is coping after her resignation from The Athletic. This follows allegations that she was involved in an affair with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, which both parties have firmly denied.

Suggestive Photos Spark Controversy and Investigation

Last week, provocative photos were published showing Vrabel, aged 50, and Russini, aged 43, in a series of intimate moments. The images captured them hugging, lounging poolside, and laughing together at a luxurious resort in Sedona, Arizona, where rooms cost $2,500 per night. Both Vrabel, the reigning NFL Coach of the Year, and Russini, a top reporter for The Athletic before her resignation, are married to other people and each have two sons with their respective spouses.

Industry Support Amidst Backlash

Fox Sports Radio host Jon 'Stugotz' Weiner publicly expressed his support for Russini, stating he would hire her immediately if she left The Athletic. He argued that the entire sports media industry is filled with conflicts of interest and dismissed the allegations as overblown. Weiner, who has worked with Russini in the past on 'The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz', revealed he spoke to her and described her as going through a very difficult time, but confident she will survive this ordeal.

Denials and Defiant Statements

Both Russini and Vrabel have issued statements confirming their interaction on March 28 but denying any improper conduct. Vrabel specifically labeled the story as 'laughable', while Russini told Page Six that they were at the resort with larger groups of people, suggesting the photos were taken out of context. Despite this, on Tuesday, Russini resigned from The Athletic, though she stood firmly behind all of her work from her 15-year career at the publication, ESPN, and other outlets.

In a defiant statement, Russini insisted that her resignation does not imply she crossed any ethical lines with Vrabel. She emphasized that she resigned not because she accepts the constructed narrative, but to avoid giving it further attention and to prevent it from defining her career. She affirmed her professionalism and dedication in covering the NFL throughout her career.

The Athletic's Response and Ongoing Review

Initially, The Athletic supported Russini unequivocally when the Page Six item first appeared, expressing confidence in her work and pride in her journalism. However, days after the photos emerged, the publication announced it was reinvestigating Russini and sidelined her during the process. Executive editor Steven Ginsberg informed Athletic reporters that leadership took the matter seriously from the start, with clear concerns arising as additional information emerged.

Ginsberg noted that while the investigation into Russini's conduct was ongoing, she chose to resign. The Athletic will continue a standards review of her work, indicating the complexity and sensitivity of the situation within the sports media landscape.
