Brentford manager Thomas Frank has delivered a firm hands-off warning to Liverpool and any other potential suitors contemplating a big-money summer swoop for Tottenham Hotspur's highly-rated defender, Micky Van de Ven.
Contract Standoff Amid Spurs' Struggles
The Netherlands international centre-half, who is under contract with Tottenham until 2029, is reportedly resisting attempts to secure him on a new, improved deal. This hesitation comes as Spurs languish once more in the bottom half of the Premier League table, currently sitting in 14th place ahead of their weekend fixture against Burnley.
The North London club is beset by injuries, with manager Frank himself under increasing pressure. Concerns have surfaced that Van de Ven may suspect Tottenham cannot match his personal ambitions for silverware and Champions League football.
Intensifying Interest from Elite Clubs
Van de Ven's stellar performances have not gone unnoticed. He has been linked with European giants Real Madrid in the past, and Liverpool's interest is understood to have intensified recently. This follows Manchester City beating the Reds to the signature of England centre-half Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, making Van de Ven an even more attractive alternative target.
Frank was unequivocal about the defender's importance. 'He's definitely a player we should prioritise,' said the Brentford boss, though he confessed uncertainty over the progress of contract talks. 'Definitely, for me, Micky is a key player for this team and this club and hopefully for many years to come. He has what it takes to be an even better player and I've no doubt he can help us to get us to where we want to be in the future.'
A Stellar Signing Proving His Worth
Spurs secured Van de Ven's services from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £34.5 million. The Dutchman proved an instant hit, captivating fans and pundits alike with his electric pace and a unique ability to maraud forward out of defence with the ball confidently at his feet.
Leadership and Goal-Scoring Prowess
The 24-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable individual campaign, netting six goals this season. This includes one spectacular solo effort against Copenhagen in the Champions League back in November, where he embarked on a lung-busting run from deep inside his own half.
His influence within the squad has grown significantly. Van de Ven has been promoted to the players' leadership group this season and has captained the side in the absence of Cristian Romero. Importantly, he appears to have finally overcome the persistent hamstring issues that plagued his first two seasons in London.
Manager's Confidence in Player's Happiness
When questioned on Thursday about whether Van de Ven remained content at the club, Frank pointed to positive recent interactions. 'I just saw him, and he seemed very happy, smiling,' Frank revealed. 'He was happy after the game that we won when he was in the changing room after the game.'
Frank heaped further praise on his defender, labelling him a 'fantastic ambassador' for Tottenham. 'Micky is an excellent player and a fantastic ambassador for this club. He has potentially the best season he's had so far. He's fit, he's strong, good defensively. He's growing as a leader, scoring goals as well. He's a very important player for us this season and for the future.'
In other club news, Tottenham confirmed they have completed the signing of midfielder Souza from Brazilian side Santos.
