Wolves have been relegated from the Premier League after eight seasons, with a draw against West Ham on Monday confirming their fate. The defeat ends a miserable campaign that saw the club fail to recover from years of selling their best talent and replacing them with inferior players.
Manager Rob Edwards could not prevent the drop, as Wolves' decline was predictable. The club barely survived last season, relying heavily on Matheus Cunha, Jørgen Strand Larsen, and Rayan Aït-Nouri. However, all three were sold: Cunha and Aït-Nouri departed last summer, and Strand Larsen left in January.
Wolves have sold a staggering list of key players since their 2019-20 peak, including Pedro Neto, Max Kilman, Matheus Nunes, Rúben Neves, Raúl Jiménez, Adama Traoré, Diogo Jota, and Morgan Gibbs-White. Despite spending nearly £600 million since 2020, the club has recruited poorly, leaving a squad with few saleable assets beyond teenager Mateus Mané.
The club's board and recruitment department have been criticised for mismanagement, with comparisons to Homer Simpson running a nuclear reactor. Wolves are expected to return to the Premier League eventually, but the timeline remains uncertain.
