Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has pledged to cover medical costs for any fan involved in the Huntingdon train knife attack, after a season-ticket holder was seriously injured while protecting a young girl. The incident occurred on Saturday evening on a high-speed train returning from the club's match against Manchester United.
British Transport Police confirmed that two people remain in a life-threatening condition, with nine others treated in hospital. The Forest fan, whose identity has not been disclosed, suffered serious injuries in the course of shielding a child during the attack. The exact nature of his injuries and current condition are unknown.
Marinakis, the Greek businessman, issued a statement expressing shock and sadness. 'The courage and selflessness shown by our supporters on that train represents the very best of humanity and the very best of our club’s community,' he said. 'We will make sure any supporter caught up in this incident receives whatever financial support they require to enable them to access the best possible medical care as they recover.'
The club also extended its deepest concern and heartfelt sympathy to all affected, highlighting that many London-based supporters were travelling home after the 2-2 draw at the City Ground. Forest commended the extraordinary bravery shown by individuals, which 'undoubtedly helped prevent even greater harm'.
