Footballer's Widow Announces Pregnancy With Late Husband's Baby Via IVF

On the eve of the first anniversary of footballer Joe Thompson's tragic death, his widow Chantelle Thompson has shared an extraordinary revelation: she is 26 weeks pregnant with his baby, conceived through IVF using a frozen embryo. The 36-year-old influencer and beauty brand founder is carrying what she believes to be a baby boy, fulfilling a poignant vision her husband described before succumbing to Hodgkin's lymphoma.

A Vision of Hope Amidst Grief

Chantelle recounts that six months before Joe's passing, he had a vivid premonition of her in their garden, playfully tossing a baby boy into the air. "He said, 'Chan I've seen it. He was a boy'," she recalls. This vision held profound significance for the couple, who had previously experienced the loss of a baby boy in 2021 before welcoming their daughter Athena. Joe assured her, "I've seen him - he's here. There's nothing to worry about. He's going to be here. He gave me his name."

The couple, teenage sweethearts who married in 2016, had always dreamed of a house full of children. However, Joe's cancer diagnosis in 2013, followed by recurrences in 2017 and 2024, complicated their plans. After his second diagnosis, medical professionals informed them that natural conception was unlikely due to the effects of his stem cell transplant on his sperm production. This led them to embark on their IVF journey in 2018.

The IVF Decision That Made Posthumous Pregnancy Possible

During their IVF consultations years ago, the couple had a crucial conversation about what would happen to their stored genetic material if one of them passed away. "At the time I was laughing, 'I can use your sperm, you can use my eggs.' We signed for that," Chantelle explains. This foresight allowed her to pursue pregnancy after Joe's death. "I just knew I definitely wanted to have more children. It was just kind of in my mind. I was like, 'when is the right time to do that?' And it just felt right."

Their IVF journey has been marked by both heartbreak and miracles. Their first attempt resulted in a pregnancy after three years, only to end in the devastating loss of their son Dre a week before his due date. Then, against all odds, they conceived Athena naturally. "They tested Joe's sperm and it was like, 'you are flying - there's more than your average man in there.' She [Athena] was just meant to be here," Chantelle describes the unexpected natural conception as "crazy."

Spiritual Connections and Messages From Beyond

Chantelle, who describes herself and Joe as spiritual, believes she has received signs from her late husband. She recounts an experience where she spontaneously began singing the Black Eyed Peas song "Meet Me Halfway," only for her daughter Athena to reveal it was her father's favorite song. When Chantelle's sister pointed out the lyrics - "meet me halfway, right at the borderline, is where I'm going to wait for you" - she interpreted it as a message from Joe. "I must've cried for about two hours. I just know it was a message from Joe, he's waiting for me to connect when I'm ready."

The song reappeared multiple times in the following weeks, including in a restaurant and during breakfast, reinforcing her belief in his spiritual presence. "It's a reminder, I know he's there. I can't imagine how people cope when they don't have that belief when someone passes. People think it's the end, when it's really not."

Life Lessons From Loss and New Beginnings

Joe's illness and passing have fundamentally changed Chantelle's perspective on life. "It made us realise just how precious life is," she reflects, noting how they prioritized family time, homeschooling their children and cherishing every moment together. Her new motto embodies this realization: "Don't waste your life. Don't waste your time, because we don't know what that time looks like."

While raising their daughters Lula, 12, and Athena, 3, with help from her mother in their renovated Manchester farmhouse, Chantelle acknowledges that this new baby won't replace Joe. However, she finds beauty in the continuation of his legacy. "To be able to bring his baby into the world again is beautiful," she says, embracing this second miracle pregnancy as both a tribute to her late husband and a testament to their enduring love.

Joe Thompson, who came through Manchester United's academy before playing for Rochdale, scored a crucial winning goal against Charlton Athletic in 2018 that saved his club from relegation. Following his third cancer diagnosis, he dedicated himself to fundraising and supporting other families facing similar challenges, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and compassion that continues through his family.
