Flick Explains Rashford Bench Decision as Barcelona Fall to Chelsea
Flick on Rashford benching for Barcelona vs Chelsea

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has provided a clear explanation for his decision to name Marcus Rashford on the substitutes' bench for their crucial Champions League encounter against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Form and Fitness Dictate Flick's Selection

Flick pointed to two key factors influencing his team selection. Firstly, he highlighted the impressive recent form of Ferran Torres, who scored twice in Barcelona's 4-0 La Liga victory over Athletic Club the previous weekend. Secondly, he noted that Rashford had been sidelined for several days due to illness, missing that same match.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo before the game, Flick elaborated on his thinking. "Ferran scored two goals on Saturday - and Marcus had been out for three or four days due to his injury," the Barcelona boss stated. However, he was quick to assure that the Manchester United loanee was "ready to play at any moment."

A Difficult Night for Barcelona in London

Flick proved true to his word at half-time, introducing Rashford in place of Torres, who had missed a significant opportunity during the first half. The substitution came as Barcelona's situation deteriorated rapidly.

The visitors found themselves a goal down after an unfortunate Jules Kounde own goal and were then reduced to ten men following Ronald Araujo's dismissal. The second half saw Chelsea extend their lead with a spectacular strike from Estevao Willian and a composed finish from Liam Delap.

With Barcelona playing with a numerical disadvantage for the entire second period, Rashford found it challenging to make a meaningful impact on the game.

Flick's Continued Faith in Rashford

Despite the difficult circumstances of his introduction, the 28-year-old forward is unlikely to face severe criticism for his performance. Flick has consistently expressed his admiration for the England international.

Earlier in the week, the manager had warmly discussed Rashford's integration into the squad. "I'm really very happy [he is back]," Flick said. "I've followed him, I think, his whole career... I was impressed about him, with his quality, what he is doing in the box, what he is doing in front of goal."

Flick also suggested that the change of scenery has benefitted the player, noting, "You can see now he is also smiling a lot, and if he can enjoy the atmosphere we have, it is also good for him."

This public support is backed by Rashford's contributions on the pitch. With 13 goal contributions so far this campaign, he is making a strong case for Barcelona to trigger the £26 million buy-option included in his loan deal from Manchester United.
